Tra le verdi colline toscane, di fronte alla celebre città medievale di San Gimignano, nota per le sue imponenti torri (la Manhattan medievale), si erge la Proprietà di Cusona. Il primo dcumento che testimonia l'esistenza di Cusona data del 994.

Da sempre sede storica dell’azienda, luogo che parla di vino e vite dal 1200, l’azienda si estende su una superficie coltivata in vigneti di Vernaccia di San Gimignano e altre varietà a bacca bianca, oltre che Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon. La vinificazione e l’affinamento avvengono nella storica cantina, mentre l’imbottigliamento e lo stoccaggio vengono effettuati nella nuova.

La fama della Vernaccia di San Gimignano è testimoniata da personalità come Michelangelo Buonarroti,che scrisse un poema per suggellare le sue impressioni sulla Vernaccia; da Dante Alighieri,che osò citarla nel Purgatorio; mentre la contabilità di Cusona registra:
“…per porto di venti fiaschi di Vernaccia si mandò a donare a Lorenzo de Medici, il Magnifico”
e poi
“Se quel saggio di Vernaccia che vi mandai sarà piaciuto a Nostro Signore, manderò questo resto o per le poste o per un vecturale”, scriveva Lorenzo il Magnifico all’ambasciatore fiorentino a Roma, riferendosi al Papa.

Un curiosità: la Vernaccia di San Gimignano alla Corte di Cosimo de Medici veniva impiegata quale rimedio contro la sazietà di stomaco e la nausea.

Amongst the green hills of Tuscany close to the famous medieval city of San Gimignano with its imposing towers (the “Medieval Manhattan”), the estate of Cusona can boast over 1000 years of history; in fact the oldest document which bears testimony to the existence of Cusona is dated 994!!!

Always the historic headquarters of the business, a place which echoes the wines and lives of the 1200s, the estate extends over an area of 530 hectares where are cultivated the vines of Vernaccia di San Gimignano and other varieties of white grapes as well as Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vinification and maturing take place in the historic cellars, the bottling and storage are carried out in the new ones.

Michelangelo Buonarroti, following a pleasant trip in San Gimignano, wrote a poem to express his impression of his tasting of Vernaccia.

Dante Alighieri describes the wine Vernaccia in The Divine Comedy, daring to place it in Purgatory.

From the accounts records of Cusona:
“…20 flasks of Vernaccia to be despatched by carriage as a gift to Lorenzo de Medici, the Magnificent”.

And Lorenzo the Magnificent himself wrote to the Florentine Ambassador in Rome, referring to the Pope: “If this sample of Vernaccia which I am sending is to the taste of Our Lordship I will send the reminder by mail or by coach”.

.....Not to forget that the Vernaccia di San Gimignano was very useful at that time, being used at the Court of Cosimo di Medici as a remedy for stomach fullness and nausea too!!!
