La Comunità di Sant’Egidio nasce a Roma nel 1968, all’indomani del Concilio Vaticano II. Oggi è un movimento di laici a cui aderiscono più di 60.000 persone, impegnato nella comunicazione del Vangelo e nella carità a Roma, in Italia e in 73 paesi dei diversi continenti. E' "Associazione pubblica di laici della Chiesa". Le differenti comunità, sparse nel mondo, condividono la stessa spiritualità e i fondamenti che caratterizzano il cammino di Sant’Egidio:

La preghiera,che accompagna la vita di tutte le comunità a Roma e nel mondo e ne costituisce un elemento essenziale. La preghiera è il centro e il luogo primario dell’orientamento complessivo della vita comunitaria.

La comunicazione del Vangelo, cuore della vita della Comunità, che si estende a tutti coloro che cercano e chiedono un senso nella vita.

La solidarietà con i poveri, vissuta come servizio volontario e gratuito, nello spirito evangelico di una Chiesa che è "Chiesa di tutti e particolarmente dei poveri" (Giovanni XXIII).

L'ecumenismo, vissuto come amicizia, preghiera e ricerca dell'unità tra i cristiani del mondo intero.

Il dialogo, indicato dal Vaticano II come via della pace e della collaborazione tra le religioni, ma anche come modo di vita e come metodo per la riconciliazione nei conflitti.

The Community of Sant’Egidio began in Rome in 1968, in the period following the Second Vatican Council. Today it is a movement of lay people and has more than 50,000 members, dedicated to evangelization and charity, in Rome, Italy and more than 70 countries throughout the world.

The Community of Sant’Egidio is a “Church pPublic lay Aassociation of the Laity”. The different communities, spread throughout the world, share the same spirituality and principles which that characterize the way of Sant’Egidio:

Prayer, which is an essential part of the life of the community in Rome and communities throughout the world. Prayer is central to the overall direction of community life.

Communicating the Gospel, the heart of the life of the Community, which extends to all those who seek and ask for a meaning for their life.

Solidarity with the poor, lived as a voluntary and free service, in the evangelical spirit of a Church that is the “Church for of all, and particularly Church of the poor” (Pope John XXIII).

Ecumenism, lived as a friendship, prayer and search for unity among Christians of the whole world.

Dialogue, recommended by Vatican II as a way of peace and co-operation among the religions, and also a way of life and as a means of resolving conflicts.
The Community has as its centre the Roman Church of Sant’Egidio, from which the Community takes its name. From its very beginnings, in the area of Trastevere and in Rome, the Community has maintained, in the area of Trastevere and in Rome, a continuous presence of prayer and welcome for the poor and for pilgrims.
